Sea To Sky Kiteboarding offers lessons for beginner to advanced riders of all ages. With over 10 years of teaching experience, our lessons run almost all year around with our 2 locations, Squamish, B.C. and La Ventana, Baja, Mexico. At both locations we provide brand new equipment from the most recognized kiting brands. We use the most advanced teaching techniques, radio headsets and boat support for safe and fast learning. All our lessons are customized to your ability and previous experience.
Learning to kiteboard requires determination and confidence. We understand it can be a significant commitment of time and money, which is why we offer packages to suit everyone’s requirements.
Sea To Sky Kiteboarding works in partnership with the Squamish Wind Sports Society (SWS). The SWS allows use of the Squamish River for recreational sports. With on-site staff from May to September to run retrieval boat services to ensure everyone in the area is safe. A small fee of $20 is payable to them each time you ride or you can purchase a membership.
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your lesson. You will need to sign in with the SWS and get fitted with a wetsuit and equipment.
Level 1 – Discover kiteboarding
Your first lesson will be 3 hours long. The first 1.5 hours will review:
- Equipment required to kiteboard: helmets, wetsuits, harnesses, 4 and 5-line kites, kiteboard and pump.
- Wind, tide, water temperature and weather. How to kiteboard at Squamish Spit.
- Setting up a kite and packing down it down.
- Kite Safety systems: how they work and when to use them.
- Flying a trainer kite. Wind window theory. Right of way rules.
- Body dragging: down wind and upwind.
The second 1.5 hours will get you in the water and focus on kite-control in the water:
- Going downwind.
- Steering left and right.
- Relaunching the kite on the water
- Trimming the kite power
- Going upwind with the kite.
Ultimately your instructor will take you upwind in the boat to practice your first body-drags with a kite. If time and progress allow, you will be given a chance to get on a board, but this is not guaranteed.
The lesson is focused on you. We aim to teach quality lessons not quantity.

We use the new Liquid Force foilboard for lessons. Low aspect wings, and a durable design will have you up and foiling in your very first lesson. Participants must use their own kite equipment: we supply the foilboard, instructor and boat to get you upwind and away from the crowd.
